Shift in the Billionaire Landscape: LVMH’s Arnault Surpasses Musk as Luxury Outperforms

The world’s wealthiest individual has undergone another change. On January 26, according to Forbes’ real-time billionaire rankings, Bernard Arnault, the President of LVMH, once again ascended to the pinnacle of wealth, boasting assets totaling US$207.8 billion.

However, Arnault’s resurgence to the zenith of wealth this time can largely be attributed to the downturn experienced by the erstwhile richest individual, Musk.

During the fourth quarter of 2023, Tesla’s performance fell short of expectations. Its revenue and profits for the quarter markedly undershot projections, leading to a significant downturn in its stock price.

On January 25, 2024, Tesla’s stock value plummeted by over 12%, resulting in an evaporation of $82 billion in Tesla’s market capitalization and causing Musk’s wealth to shrink by more than $18 billion.

Simultaneously, LVMH unveiled its financial performance for the fourth quarter and the entirety of 2023. This served as yet another catalyst for Arnault’s return to the apex.

Judging solely from its fourth-quarter performance, LVMH’s single-quarter organic revenue growth of 10% year-on-year surpassed market expectations. By contrast, its revenue growth in the third quarter of 2023 stood at a modest 9%.

The surge in LVMH’s stock price by 12% on January 26, owing to its fourth-quarter turnaround, propelled Arnault’s net worth to a historic high of $207.6 billion, surpassing Musk’s.

While market expectations for the recovery of LVMH Group have rebounded, it is imperative to acknowledge that LVMH’s trajectory has not always been smooth sailing.

In comparison to previous years, LVMH’s annual revenue growth of 9% in 2023 was unforeseeable. In 2022, its revenue growth rate peaked at 23%, while in 2021, it soared to 44%.

Even from a quarterly growth perspective, a 10% growth rate, though respectable, falls short of the mark, especially considering that the fourth quarter is traditionally a peak season.

Even in the initial two quarters of 2023, LVMH’s quarterly revenue growth hovered around 20%.

In essence, the recent performance of this conglomerate, which catapulted Arnault to the summit of wealth, has not met expectations. The surge in LVMH’s stock price appears to be more a reflection of the market’s improved outlook for 2024.

While the global economy grapples with ongoing recovery efforts amid inflationary pressures and geopolitical tensions, and the concept of “downgraded consumption” permeates the discourse among the populace, the luxury goods sector is widely regarded as being less susceptible to economic vicissitudes.

One rationale for this resilience is the perception that luxury goods cater primarily to the affluent. However, does the current performance imply that even the affluent are curbing their consumption habits?

Not necessarily. While LVMH’s recent performance may seem unforeseen, it is not entirely unwarranted. Signs of decline have been discernible in its past performance. However, LVMH is not alone in this predicament.
