There are pygmy cormorants coming from afar

At the end of November 2018, a piece of news spread throughout the land of China, the Manas Wetland in Xinjiang, and more than 40 pygmy cormorants were found. Ornithologists, ecologists, bird photography enthusiasts, and many “bird friends” rushed to each other and were excited.
You must ask, what is a pygmy cormorant? How can it excite so many people?
I believe you must have seen such a picture: the evening sunset, the lake is calm, a small boat, drifting leisurely, the fisherman on the boat is wearing a hat, and a few ospreys are squatting on the bow. That Osprey is a cormorant.
So, are pygmy cormorants also Ospreys? Let me tell you, all the birds of the cormorant family are “osprey”, and they are all fishing experts. The dwarf cormorant, as the name implies, is the “dwarf” in the cormorant. They are the smallest members of the cormorant family. Their body length is only 45-50 cm, and their wings are only 80-90 cm.
However, don’t look at people’s small size, the value is still very high. The body of the pygmy cormorant is not black like ordinary cormorants, but dark brown, only the head is brown, and the feathers have a metallic luster. It has a long tail and a light posture, and can stand on the reeds and swing with the wind. Like the sparrows we see every day, the male, male and female cormorants are no different from the sparrows in size, body shape, feather color, etc. Only during the breeding period, they will have red spots on their heads and necks. This characteristic is an important sign that distinguishes them from other cormorants.
The mouth of a pygmy cormorant is not as long as a common cormorant, but it is very hard. There are grooves on both sides of the “upper jaw”, and there is a larynx sac at the base of the “lower jaw”; a hook at the end of the mouth is suitable for pecking; the neck is short and thick, flexible; , Easy to swim … All this makes it a master of fishing. Freshwater lakes, brackish beach waters, and wetland reed areas with overgrown trees are their favorite habitats, and small fish, shrimp, and small crustacean aquatic life are their main food.
This seems normal, but how can it excite so many people?
Pygmy cormorants are migratory birds. Their breeding grounds are mainly in southeastern Europe (east to Italy), Russia and Central Asia, and overwintering grounds are in Albania, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Iraq and other places. According to the information consulted by the Xinjiang Bird Watching Society, in the early 20th century, some researchers sorted out the birds collected in the Kashgar region from 1908 to 1909 in detail and wrote the book “Birds in Kashgar”. The book once recorded the discovery of pygmy cormorants in Xinjiang. This is the only record about the distribution of pygmy cormorants in China so far. Since then, more than a hundred years have passed. Ornithologists, ecologists, bird photography enthusiasts, and many “bird friends” across the country have never seen this kind of bird again.
On March 27, 2017, a Kazakhstan “Bird Friends” published an article saying that in the city of Taldi-Kurgan in Kazakhstan, not far from the border between Xinjiang and Kazakhstan, China, a dwarf cormorant was found. Population. It is only about 110 kilometers away from the border of Yili. In response to this discovery, a senior “bird friend” of the Xinjiang Bird Watching Association analyzed that the living environment of the pygmy cormorant at this point is relatively similar to the environment in the Yili area. This means that in the Ili Valley, including other parts of Xinjiang, there may also be a species of dwarf cormorant. Now, some people have found dozens of pygmy cormorants in the Manas wetland in Xinjiang, which just confirmed the bold prediction of the senior “bird friend” of the Bird Watching Society at that time.
The pygmy cormorant is a rare species in the world, and it is also spotted in Europe. Today, this rare species appears in large numbers in Xinjiang, it is really rare, it is a sensation for the entire bird science. Experts believe that the reason why the discovered pygmy cormorant appeared in Xinjiang in late November may have been lost during the migration, or it may be looking for a new wintering place.
Zi said: “It’s fun to have friends coming from afar?” Whether these pygmy cormorants were originally indigenous people in Xinjiang, or they had travelled thousands of miles from Europe and Central Asia and lost their way, or came to find new habitat Our motherland, Xinjiang, is a matter of joy.
