Sociology of Worms and Health

Sociology of Worms and Health
These days have been fighting, fighting bugs, fighting rats, defending my cleanliness and hygiene!

The house we rented was built in the 1850s, it is about 170 years old, and it has everything we imagine of being old. The all-wood structure makes a sound from time to time. The cracks in the wooden boards and the gaps in the house’s foundation provide space for the passage of animals and plants. The cracked layers of white skin on the wall tell the ancient story. The whole house is in the forest, surrounded by nature.

A neglected house in the middle of nature, when you first moved in, every corner of the house was covered with large and small spider webs. I took the broom and cleaned it from the roof first, then wiped it with a rag. What appeared in my mind was the industrious girl in the rural town of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, with a bucket around him, a rag over the bucket, and a dustpan in his hand to clean the house.

As the cleaning progressed, I found that almost every place where there was a spider web, a large or small spider ran out, and whenever I encountered it, I screamed and threw away the rag and ran away. Spiders are the most common, but not only there are spiders, each house has several windows, and each window is covered with large and small unknown bugs. At first I thought that all the spiders with eight legs were spiders. Later, I found that there are all kinds of weird bugs that look like eight legs. The daily experience is constantly refreshing my cognition. Life is frightening, and I am always on alert. The first thing after getting up and the last thing before falling asleep are to look up, bow down, inspect all corners, and be ready to destroy the insects at any time!

Later I saw more, but I’m used to it. But despite the habit, they are not accustomed to bugs and can never be accustomed to it. I’ve been thinking about this clean day, what is causing me to be so afraid of bugs?

I think carefully because I have never lived in a natural environment, which is a completely new experience for me. Bugs are in the distant nature, far from my city life. I was born in Beijing and grew up in Beijing. Buildings are jungle-like, and natural jungles are just artificial objects for urban decoration. The function of nature is to beautify the urban environment. The flowers, plants and trees in the city are carefully designed crafts. In addition, in order to make this artificial thing last long and exist only as a handicraft, it is necessary to spray various drugs regularly to expel insects.

I remember when I was a kid, every day after the rain, the weather was refreshing, I ran to the yard to play, walked along the bushes in the yard, and found a lot of snails and earthworms. This was one of my childhood joys. I squatted on the ground and watched them crawl slowly, put them in the palm of my hand to play, and occasionally took the snails home to raise them. I don’t want to be afraid of these little creatures. One day later, after the rain, no snails and earthworms came out, and they gradually disappeared. I asked my dad puzzledly. Dad said that it might be because the green plants in the yard were sprayed with medicine, so these little creatures were gone. Later, Dad forbade me to touch the plants in the yard, because they were all medicines, hurting my hands and my body. Gradually, I stopped playing in the yard, and wanted to come to the day when my daily experience with nature was rooted.

Although we know that nature gave birth to our lives and gave us food, what is nature? Perhaps for modern urban people, nature is the knowledge in books, the rural and remote areas far from the city. Whether lush or desolate, she is a distant existence. We are the subject and nature is an accessory, which has become a default configuration and a social cognition.

In recent years, in my studies, I have been constantly self-analyzing and reflecting on myself. I have realized the arrogance and narrowness of anthropocentrism, the intimate relationship between man and land, and man and nature, and the concept of ecology as a human civilization Cognition, not just the superficial understanding of the living environment.

However, even if it is recognized at the theoretical level, it is still very difficult to know the unity of action. Even though it has been completely transformed at the level of consciousness, how can I be accustomed to dust and insects in nature in the habit of living in an industrialized city? Do I have to clean them up or keep them as far away from my living space as possible.

Not only bugs, but also so much dust that I was helpless. I cleaned my study desk and wiped it four times before I could barely clean it. Later, I learned to be clever. I took the vacuum cleaner and sucked it up first. No matter it was the insects or the dust, it was more convenient to wipe it. I have a vacuum cleaner in my heart, I am really grateful. Thank you so much for the inventor of the vacuum cleaner. I can’t live without it! So, what is dust? How can we clean it up? In other words, is it dust-free space or the earth? Can humans survive?

The modern concept of hygiene stipulates that “dust” stands for “dirty”, “dirty” stands for “backward” and “non-modern”. Therefore, when you enter the house, you need to change your slippers and home clothes. Even if you wear home clothes in the house, you should change your clothes in the bedroom when you enter the bedroom; Do not touch the bed. These rules are the yardsticks of modernization, and are important indicators of a person’s degree of modernization and civilization. My family education has kept me at the upstream of modernization. Since I was a child, I have used this ruler to measure the modernization and civilization of others. So, at this moment, when I rethink the ruler and its scale, I don’t sigh: Where does this standard come from and what does it mean?

This is the sociology of health. These days I have been thinking about the sociology of health. What does the concept of “health” include? For example, it must be clean and free of dust; it must be humanized and free of insects; it must be disinfected and free of bacteria. So how is the concept of hygiene constructed? How does the implementation of the concept of “health” change people and nature? What is the relationship between this ideology and industrial civilization? On the one hand, urban manpower seeks to isolate nature and live in a so-called “modernized” humanized environment. On the other hand, there is still the beauty of nature in the deep consciousness. It is necessary to arrange nature in the community and streets, to arrange nature in your own home, to buy flowers and plants, but at the same time to eliminate bugs in flowers and plants. What does this screwing mean?

Living in this house, I often have the illusion that we are an uninvited guest who broke into nature. The urban landscape shaped by industrialized cities has not polluted the pure land. Here I feel an unprecedented awe of nature. Of course, from time to time, I was frightened by the majestic nature of nature. However, travel was short-lived and opened up my inner territory, but it did not become a part of my daily life that had to be awed and had no other choice.

Why is there no other way? Because humans are accustomed to transforming nature and think that they have the ability to transform nature. Because since the scientific revolution, humans have regarded control and oppression as the norm. The arrogance and arrogance of the industrial civilization created by mankind, while destroying nature, is also destroying mankind itself. Although I have been liberated at the level of consciousness, my body’s perception and response are still trapped by the ideology of industrial civilization. In this trouble and struggle, for the first time, I hate the consciousness of mankind to control the nature. This kind of hatred comes from the level of my body perception.

How much I yearn for running in the forest in the backyard without having to be constantly alert to bugs flying around. How long I want to lie in the sun on Cornell’s lawn, without having to be alert to bugs crawling on me. How long I want to be free in my own home, without having to look up and look down at the creeping creatures in the corner at any time.

Materials, nature, and human living environment
Since returning to Ithaca from Boston on the night of September 3, he has officially moved into a newly rented house. This is an ancient house built in the 1850s. The owner of the house is a couple. Mr. David is an art agent who runs his own gallery in Montreal, Canada. Ms. Vicky is an oil painter, and she also creates some sculptures in addition to painting. For example, after entering the house, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that there are many plaster-made artworks in the corners and on the balcony. They are strangely shaped, carved with different styles of cutouts, and placed with lights in the sculpture. Each beam of light is projected to the roof and walls through different shaped hollows, and starlight is sprinkled throughout the house. Vicky was born in this house. Her ancestors were early immigrants from England to New England. This house has a longer history than Cornell University.

Now the couple take this place as a summer vacation, and they come back for three months every summer. There is a Vicky studio on the first floor of the house, where she creates. According to David, the previous tenants were mostly artists and writers, and everyone praised the beautiful and peaceful house for their continuous creative inspiration.

This is a small Victorian two-story building. All wooden floors. The lowest floor is the basement, where living and washing equipment are located. When I went down for the first time, I opened the door and stepped into the dark underground step by step. This feeling was like the scene reappearance in American drama, where all horror and thriller happened. When I think about it, I am happy, because this is what the locals live like, and it is this pair that creates unlimited space for creation.

On the ground floor of the house is the event space, a living room with large bay windows, and a set of sofas facing the west window. Opposite the window, which is to the north of the doorway, is another large window full of dark green. This corner is designed to be a solitary space in the sunlight, and a sofa chair faces out the window. There is a door to the south of the living room. Near the window is the kitchen. Behind the kitchen is a small dining table for four. Another door near the doorway leads in two directions, one is the study, and the other is the staircase upstairs. To the south of the living room is a small four-story staircase downward. To the right of the small staircase stands a pure wooden handrail, like an ancient opera house. Stepping down these steps, it is a typical Victorian-style restaurant. There is a large wooden dining table that can accommodate eight people. On the striped tablecloth in the middle of the table is an old but elegant candlestick. The west side of the restaurant leads to Vicky’s studio, and the walls and floor of the studio leave color marks in the process of oil painting. Standing in the middle of the empty studio, the wanton passion of the artist came forward. To the west of the studio is a huge floor-to-ceiling glass door that opens to the backyard corridor. The sun shines into the room from the glass door, projecting light for the artist’s inspiration.

On the second floor of the house, there is a bedroom on the south and a north, each with half a living room, a bathroom, and a loft-style storage room. Speaking of bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs, with beautiful tiled floors. Old and elegant patterns are painted on the wooden floor of the south master bedroom, created by Vicky’s mother.

Wood, ceramic tiles, and glass, in this house, feel the importance of materials for human civilization.

However, I don’t know when, materials seem to be no longer important to modern people, and the emergence of chemicals such as plastic has completely changed the living space of human beings. The civilization of modern people is built on toxic and unstable space for activities. This environment and aura leads to the unhealthy and restless state of modern people’s living conditions. Returning to the ancestors of mankind, the emphasis on material requirements has made human civilization stand the test of time. If so, it is not so much that modern civilization has created technology and craftsmanship that did not exist in the past.

The house’s backyard is surrounded by approximately 26 acres of gardens, grass, and woods. There is a small pond on the hillside in the courtyard, and sometimes I see fish and turtles jumping in the pond. Surrounded by lush forest in the distance, the end of the territory is a stream that is a tributary of Cayuga Lake, one of the five largest lakes. The wide backyard is full of all kinds of unnamed plants. Bees and butterflies dance tirelessly among the flowers, and the leaves dance with the breeze. The chipmunk ran at will, and the little raccoon and rabbit poked their heads in the evening, and from time to time, herds of deer came to hang out.

The boundary of everything is just the boundary of people, and animals and plants enjoy the joy of freedom. No borders, no barriers, maybe they are the true guardians of the earth’s ecology.

I just walked back from the yard. Today, on the lush grass growing in disorder, a mushroom, a small mushroom in the shape of a single shadow, was found. Immediately rejoicing, adopted this mushroom as my little companion. In the backyard, three unnamed flowers of different colors, one yellow, one white, and one purple, were cut into the bottle for viewing. After all the play was over, I sat down at the wooden table in front of the bay window in the living room and enjoyed the quietness and wrote this essay.

Human ancestors can really design, value materials, respect nature, and more importantly, design the house to bring nature home to the greatest extent possible. The living room when entering the house was facing a large bay window protruding outward, and the whole garden was outside the window. Enjoy the blue sky and white clouds and warm sunlight during the day, and admire the sunset slowly descending on the treetops not far away in the evening. Every window in the house is large, for fear of missing the slightest natural beauty. At least one bird feeder is hung out of each window, filled with cereal. After the sun rises, the birds fall on the feeder from time to time to eat, sometimes one, sometimes a pair. Most of the beautiful birds I have never seen, such as the big red bird, she has a magical name called Cardinal, the beauty of the creation is amazing. They ate for a while, looked up at me, and the dregs dropped during the pecking process were the delicious meal of the chipmunk.

If you ask me about Wonderland on earth, this is the place now.

However, there is no home outside the window
I used to have a close friend, he is a black parrot. I call him Xiao Xuan, and I love him very much. He died on October 11, 2016, just two months. In his short life, my company was not for decades.

Thinking of Xiao Xuan, what appeared to me was a petite figure, standing on the parrot rack, looking out the window. The parrot stand was on the window sill. At first we let him face the room, but he turned around and turned out of the window for a few hours. That depth is like a meditator.

Xiaoxuan arrived just six weeks ago, just beginning to learn to fly. From time to time, he fluttered his wings and fluttered in the room. He rushed to the ground and ran into the glass window once, and he heard the sound of distress. He wanted to fly out the window and into the blue sky, that was his home. In the last few days of his life, the only meagre strength that could only support him from opening his eyes occasionally, but he still looked out of the window from morning to night, as if looking at the blue sky and white clouds that had been covered by the haze.

He may be looking forward to returning home. I want to open the window countless times to let him fly. However, after consulting bird experts, it was learned that the cockatiel is hot, and it is not suitable to survive in this cold north. Release him, do you help him or harm him? Therefore, all I can do is to cure his illness first, and then have the opportunity to take him to the south, and then return him to freedom. Unfortunately, Xiao Xuan didn’t hold up until then.

A similar thing happened to my two little turtles. Years ago, there was a flower, bird, fish, and insect market in front of the house. When I was hanging around with my dad, I saw traders selling turtles. In a small glass cage, so many turtles were imprisoned and squashed together. With the idea of ”rescue” them, we have selected two. One of them was always bullied, and his character was a little weak and timid, so he named him stupid. The other was naughty and named Nao Nao. Shortly after raising her, she had nightmares one after another, surrounded by a group of large and small turtles. After waking up, I consciously released two turtles. After consulting turtle experts, I learned that they are tropical turtles. If they were released in Beijing, they would be difficult to survive. So I talked with these two little guys: I’m not trying to treat you as pets, don’t worry, because you are tropical turtles, you have to wait until I go to Hainan to release you, but the plane is not allowed You can only wait until I drive. They seem to understand and have no nightmares since. However, driving to Hainan has never been a trip, and few friends around me have made this trip, so letting things go awkward and noisy has been hanging on my mind.

Benben and Noisy have a relatively large glass house, and we try to let them move in a larger space as much as possible. However, in the water, they just kept throwing at the glass, as if they were so hard that they could burst out of the glass and return to nature. Day after day, year after year. As everyone knows, there is no home outside the glass house.

This is human sin. In order to meet the needs of humans to domesticate animals and raise pets, we have paid a terrible price for the living beings. Almost every slightly larger city has a zoo or aquarium as standard. In order for people to enjoy playing with animals, we did not hesitate to disobey nature, ordered them to migrate, and imprisoned them in harsh cages. What’s more, use tools to domesticate them and force them to learn a variety of juggling skills. This kind of behavior is often also called the name of educating children. Its beautiful name is to let children know animals, but they do not know that educating children with captive animals is educating evil.

People in the city keep pets, which provides profitable space for animal traders. Cats, dogs, flowers, birds, fish, insects, snakes, minks, rabbits, chinchillas, and so on are all on the pet market. As long as you dare to raise them, they dare to sell them. The smart and capable merchants have established an integrated chain for rearing, breeding, and selling animals, and the last way to sell is even more amazing. Take bird breeding as an example. You can search for it on Taobao or WeChat. You can buy eggs and hatch yourself. You can designate several months old. You can also buy domesticated ones. It doesn’t matter which city you are in, as long as the courier can arrive; if you die during transportation, you will be compensated. Therefore, Xiao Xuan was not born in the south, but hatched in an artificial greenhouse. Vendors need to ensure that new eggs are constantly being born, new eggs are hatching, and enough birds are available for sale. Therefore, Xiao Xuan’s fate was destined to be sold as a human pet since he was not born, which is the prerequisite for his survival. He didn’t know what nature was, and he had never felt a suitable living environment. Where was his home?

People who are curious about an animal and want to know them must go to the place where they live and feel them living in nature. However, this involves another sin of human beings: Do they still have their own home where nature and its creatures grow?

At the end of 2016, my parents and I were traveling to Yangshuo. The inn I stayed in was elegantly decorated, and floor-to-ceiling windows were erected with wooden seats and wooden tables. Sitting on the table, the Yulong River is outside the window. The riverside is surrounded by greenery. In the distance there are beautiful mountains. In the vicinity are the bamboos swaying in the wind. It seemed a peaceful and peaceful atmosphere. However, the “Impression of Third Sister Liu” fragment rang from morning to night. This is the credit of the famous guide Zhang Yimou. It is said that the people of Yangshuo thank him very much, and he has increased the income of the people of Yangshuo. However, I wonder if the beautiful Yangshuo landscape would be sad when listening to the “Sister Liu” who resounded day and night? I wonder if the souls whose homes are in Yangshuo will be sad when they listen to the “Sister Liu” who resounded day and night? “Impression Liu Sanjie” is a “cultural” masterpiece of industrialized production, “creating high profits and solving the problem of labor employment”. Followed by day and night noise, a large number of tourists and garbage. The endless hustle and bustle broke the original silence. The landscape of Yangshuo has no home.

This is human sin. Industrial civilization has completely changed our living conditions. We live in a city surrounded by pollutants, garbage and noise. It is difficult for us to drink clean water, eat natural fruits and vegetables, and breathe clean air. Farmland has become a source of pollution. Is the ocean and even the sky becoming a source of pollution? This is the victory of industrialization, and the noise of reinforced concrete and garbage is clamoring for a victory. They dominate the world, mankind dominates the world, and we are justly deprived of the home of nature and the home of all living beings living in nature.

And what have we got?

For Xiao Xuan, all I can do is in his last time, do nothing and stay with him. Look out the window with him, and accompany him yearning for the haze that is no longer suitable for flying.
