The mysterious “Devil City”
Hami “Devil City” is located about 100 kilometers southwest of Hami City, Xinjiang, and can be reached by car for more than 2 hours. The Devil City, which geologists call the Yadan landform, is named after the Mongolian people. Because the strangely shaped hills are often accompanied by wind and roars, the Mongolian herdsmen living around here call it “Surumuhak”. Later, the Kazakh shepherds called this place “Hamyi Tanshi”, which means “the place where the devil lives”.
At 5 o’clock in the morning, we could not wait to drive off. Going west along National Highway 312, on the Gobi Desert on the edge of the oasis, there are circular mounds arranged in an orderly manner, like craters on the moon, leading from the foot of the Tianshan Mountains to the oasis. This is the Karez well known as the “underground canal”.
As the Gobi Desert on the way was slanted and spread from the foot of the Tianshan Mountains, the Karez in this area is particularly concentrated, with clear well lines and spectacular.
In the vast open and vast Gobi sea, the earth platforms, hills, and valleys have been eroded by thousands of years of wind and rain into various images. Some of the earthen platforms protruding from the ground are like castles, halls, and stele towers, some like galloping horses, some like the face of a devil, some like an old bull pulling a cart, some like the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, and some like Buda La Palace, some resemble a sphinx. There are also the mysterious Tallinn and the Buddha sitting in meditation… dizzying. Some of them are a few meters high, and some are tens of meters high. They are strange and vivid, and they are worthy of the masterpieces of the natural wind.
What’s more interesting is that there are many “animals” here too! Such as the Gobi lying camel, the sand sea whale swimming, the tiger roaring the group of demons, the great Peng spreading its wings… all are supernatural and natural. In front of them, they have experienced at least millions of years of wind, sun, frost, and rain, especially the sculptures polished by the strong desert wind, which is eye-opening, no wonder it has the reputation of “Yadan Crown”!
There is a monument in the scenic area of Devil City, with a letter “Viewing the Mirage”. When we went there happened to happen: Suddenly a dense lush green virgin forest appeared in front of us, Suddenly a European castle stood in the mountains, Suddenly a vast lake came into the field of vision, unpredictable, majestic and magnificent, it was difficult to distinguish the illusion and Real scene. Can’t help but amaze the magic of the Gobi Desert in Xinjiang!
Yellowstone Park landscape comparable to
Hami Ghost City, 60 kilometers from east to west, plus the Grand Canyon now found in South Lake area, may extend more than 200 kilometers from north to south about 30 km. It covers an area of 2,400 square kilometers, with diverse landforms, unique shapes, and a large area. It can be called “China’s No.
The reason for saying this is because there are many devil cities in Xinjiang, and there are four larger and more famous ones-Karamay Uerhe Devil City, General Qitai Gobi’s Devil City, Lop Nur’s “Dragon City” and The Devil City of Five Forts in Hami, among which Hami “Devil City” is the well-deserved boss!
Wandering in the Devil City, I found many fossil fragments of ancient creatures exposed under my feet. In 2014, the American “Modern Biology” magazine reported on fossil specimens found in the Hami Gobi: including about 40 female and male pterosaurs of the same species and 5 pterosaur egg fossils. This is the world’s first reported three-dimensional preservation of pterosaur egg fossils, causing a sensation.
As early as hundreds of millions of years ago, this place was not only a land of Yangyangze, but also a paradise where dinosaurs, gulls, birds, fish, turtles, shrimps and crabs thrived. Later, with the crustal movement and geological evolution, it gradually became a vicissitudes of life. Later, storms above level 10 frequently hit this place. In the extremely long years, the sharp wind knife carved the 2,400 square kilometers of land into the strange Yadan landform. Even now, there are more than 200 winds here every year, and strong winds above level 8 are not uncommon. It is for this reason that nature created this “devil city” which is well-known at home and abroad.
In the bright sunshine, the Devil City is splendid and full of masculine beauty. Here, the desert, the Gobi, the Grand Canyon, the Onyx Beach and the Devil’s City are integrated, and in the wilderness, it feels like you have reached another planet, where death, dryness, tranquility, and ruggedness are born. The “Devil City” of Hami is very distinctive in Xinjiang. It is a living fossil area for studying the formation, evolution and disappearance of Yadan landforms. The roughness here, the shapes here, the colors here, and the souls here are not only a holy place for tourists, but also a creative paradise for photographers.
Going further inside, in the hideous and fantastic Devil City, we actually saw the human remains thousands of years ago. A castle named Esker Hall faces south and is located on a steep cliff with a height of 24.5 meters. It is completely integrated with Yadan from a distance. It is condescending, majestic and dangerous, and extremely hidden. The base of the mountain on which it rests is about 7 meters high, and the existing city wall is about 50 meters long and 4 meters wide. It is divided into upper and lower floors, and there are 3 relatively complete houses. The entire castle was built with adobe.
To enter the castle, you must first enter a circular sand dune in front of it, and cross a moat-like gully between the dunes and the castle, even if you enter the scope of the castle. There are many relics of human activities around the lower urn of the castle, and many purple-red pottery pieces and rusty arrowheads are scattered on the ground.
The only way to go to the ancient castle wall is to climb up the slope of about 45 degrees along the east side very hard. Above, you can see the ruins of the northern wall, and there are still observation holes for defense and warning. The sharp gale has sharpened the city walls extremely steeply. In some places, the city walls have been suspended in the air, and some adobes have been weathered to be extremely vicious. On the city wall, you can also see the traces of the claws of the wolf and the eagle on the adobe, which makes people shudder. Experts speculate that this castle belongs to the Bronze Age, and the exact year it was built is unknown, but it has been in use during the Han and Tang Dynasties. It is an important post on the “Silk Road” section of the Dahai Road. In the 5th century, the cavalry of the Gaochang Kingdom often set out from here to patrol Lop Nur, and after the Tang and Song Dynasties, it was still used.
Standing on a high altitude and overlooking the Devil City, it is like a castle in medieval Europe. There are many castles, large and small. It is said that there are only two places on earth for such a majestic and superb landscape. Except for the “Devil City” in Hami, Xinjiang, the other is the famous Yellowstone Park in the United States.
In the middle of the night, ”
Ghost Cry and Wolf Howl”, whenever the wind rises, flying sand and rocks, the sky is dim, and the strange shadows are blurred, this Devil City becomes a chilling place. The arrow-like air flow circulated among the strange mounds and rocks, making a sharp sound. The usual screams turned into stern “ghost crying wolf howling”: either screaming like a man, screaming like a woman, or crying like a baby. Suddenly, thousands of troops and horses were beaten up like war drums. The scream resounded through the sky, and then there was a moment of silence, waiting for the next sound…
At this moment, standing on a steep hill, you will feel an artistic conception: the dangerous building is a hundred feet high and the stars can be picked by hand. Don’t dare to speak loudly, for fear of shocking the heavens.
Before you know it, the red sunset is like a gong hanging from the horizon, and the entire Devil City is bathed in the afterglow of the setting sun. The ups and downs, scattered castles are outlined in a clear outline. It seems to be covered with a maroon curtain, and a wonderful journey of a dream world is staged.
Hami “Devil City” is the filming location for the movie “No Man’s Land”. With its unique natural artistic charm, it has been successively rated as one of the “China’s Most Beautiful Yadan” and “China’s 50 Most Worth Foreigners”. Because of its wonderful nature, tourists from home and abroad are in droves.
