Caring about marine life, she picked up sea drifts to make art

In recent years, the news that marine debris harms nature is worrying. People are paying more and more attention and trying to find a proper solution to marine waste. Tang Cailing and her “Sea Drift Laboratory” have been working on beach cleaning for many years, turning sea waste into works of art.

“At the seashore, you can pick up the things a person uses for a lifetime.” said Tang Cailing, who has been working on the beach for four years in Penghu, Taiwan. “You can find a variety of waste products at the seashore.” Concerned, in addition to collecting garbage on the beach, she turned the sea waste she found on the beach into works of art: a Christmas tree, an octopus that would be able to plant trees, a bathroom… Tang Cailing even wanted to build a house with sea waste.

Falling in love with this sea but being stung by garbage
When Taiwanese girl Tang Cailing was in junior college, she liked to travel with her friends. Her first graduation trip came to Penghu. It turns out that Taiwan has such a beautiful sea as the Maldives. This is the first impression Penghu gave her. She likes the evening in Penghu very much. At that time, the wind was very cold and the sky was very beautiful.

Later, Tang Cailing became a travel photographer and visited many places, but she often missed the sea of Penghu. Every time she came here, she quickly found good creative inspiration and gradually became a regular visitor here. Tang Cailing has accumulated a lot of video stories in Penghu, and his feelings for Penghu are getting deeper and deeper. At the time, there was a space open for artists to enter the Penghu beach, where she opened a shop selling Penghu photographic postcards.

When she took a photo, she found that a lot of garbage was floating on the beach every day. They would pick up a lot of wine bottles, as well as a variety of bottles. Some were beautiful, and they began to transform these marine debris. They wanted to use beautiful art. The product makes everyone concerned about the issue of marine life. As a result, she set up a sea rafting laboratory, and will lead 50 volunteers every week to clean the beach (that is, pick up garbage and purify the beach), and work with volunteers to transform marine debris.

Vow to be the “scavenger” of the beach
Penghu’s sea is very transparent, and you can see traces of the waves and fine sand washed away. Kayak to the island. The rock and fine sand on the island have a clear boundary. Walking on the beach and seeing the endless sea of Qinglian, the whole mood is lightened up, and let the big waves throw you full of arms. However, due to the influence of the northeast monsoon and ocean currents, a large amount of drifting marine debris can be seen every day on the beach of Penghu. They rushed down the northeast along the wind, and Penghu was like a large fishing net, blocking all garbage in the Taiwan Strait.

Sea drift garbage is all-encompassing and involves all aspects of human life: toothbrushes, persimmons, milk bottles, wine bottles, disposable tableware, cash, haircut model heads, mahjong, drift bottles, fish nets… these garbage may be People inadvertently carried away by the sea on the beach, or maybe people threw them into the sea, but all the roots came from human indifference to their own living environment. These artificial rubbish that drifted across the ocean caused irreversible damage to the sea. In the captured marine life, people can find more or less indecomposable substances in their stomachs. Tang Cailing once saw a tens of kilograms of turtles with a thin nylon thread deep in the neck. It couldn’t breathe and couldn’t eat. When people helped to take the nylon thread out, its eyes shed muddy tears. She also saw a seal that was washed up on the beach after her death. Its stomach was full of plastic bags. It was these things that made the seal starved to death… She saw many similar things on the beach. Our ocean and the creatures living in it are suffering unpredictable damage.

Under her inspiration, more and more people realized the seriousness of the problem. Some shop owners no longer provide disposable plastic supplies, or even cancel packaging. And they consciously started as propagandists, and even joined Tang Cailing’s team to pick up sea waste. People call this act of picking up sea drifts “clean beaches”. Now when people talk about Penghu, they inevitably talk about “clean beaches”. To a certain extent, “clean beach” has become a different kind of scenery in Penghu.

Make the picked drifts into works of art
The glass bottle wrapped by the waves from the depths of the sea, I don’t know how many distances it has traveled. Not only is it intact, but it is also crystal clear by the current of the water, and it looks like blue crystal when facing the sun. Tang Cailing took such a bottle and was grateful for the gift of the sea. Humans throw away garbage, and the sea returns humans with beautiful gifts. Tang Cailing said: “The tolerance of the sea has also inspired me.” Whether the trash of sea floats can be used again depends on how people define it. With the assistance of people who are good at hand-made, they begin to try to transform the waste of sea floats. creation. They reassembled and assembled them based on their shapes, materials and uses, giving them a second mission to shine. But most of the sea drifts were still sent to incinerators for burning, and only a small part became beautiful crafts in the hands of Tang Cailing and volunteers.

On the beach, she will pick up many colorful bottle caps, she will collect them together, and then splice them on the ground according to different shapes and heights, and spread them into beautiful mosaic tiles, and then put the toothbrush, Comb, shampoo, shower gel and other toiletries were put in, and it turned out to be a unique bathroom. Tang Cailing and her partners made a “sea waste table” with sea floats. The details of the sea waste dining table are as follows: “Steamed Zhejiang small tube” is composed of Zhejiang floats, fishing net ropes, straws, and plastic packaging bags; the main materials of “assorted sea waste pot” are plastic colander, straws, poly dragon, bottle caps Hair curls and film tapes; “Taiwan Beer Sauce Roasted Fish” consists of Taiwan beer cans, straws, lighters, and plastic fragments. This work has a warning meaning. It tells people: what you ate at the dining table today may be what you lost yesterday. There are more transformed sea drifts into quaint works of art. They let marine litter have a life-like appearance, such as the cute little crocodile, the whimsical Einstein, and work hard Squid crawling upward…

Now Tang Cailing often goes to schools and enterprises to set up lectures on environmental education, which is half of the source of income for Haibo Lab. The other half of Haifu Lab’s income is to help companies use marine debris to make large-scale landscape arts, such as a Christmas tree surrounded by buoys and octopuses that “appeal” for the ocean, or make small pieces of decorations . They often make some collages from plastics shattered into pieces on the beach, because many marine creatures now have these things in their stomachs. Tang Cailing hopes that by transforming marine debris, more people will know about the marine debris in Penghu.

Tang Cailing’s biggest wish now is to build a house with sea waste, but she also worried about whether the materials used to build the house will cause secondary pollution. The garbage may never be picked up, but it will still affect everyone on the beach and change their mindset. Volunteer Tintin said: “Looking at every item becoming clean and changing from garbage to about to be re-given The art material is like a process of rebirth. If you can really live in every moment and concentrate on the moment at this moment, you may be able to face any difficulties.”
