  A research team has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) that can intelligently design robots from scratch.

After nine attempts, the program successfully designed a robot that can walk half its body length per second at about half the average human speed.

  Unlike human thinking, artificial intelligence does not design common legs for the robot, but punches holes in seemingly random places on the robot’s body.
  Sam Kligman hypothesized that porosity could reduce weight and increase flexibility, allowing robots to bend their legs and walk.
  “We don’t really know what the holes are for, but we know they’re important,” he said, “because when we plug the holes, the robot can’t walk.”

  Although this first AI-designed robot can only move forward, researcher Krigman envisions a future world where AI-designed robots are used. Similar robots could one day navigate the rubble of collapsed buildings, follow heat and vibration signatures to search for trapped people and animals, and travel through sewer systems to diagnose problems, unclog pipes and repair damaged pipes. AI may also design nanorobots that enter the human body and travel through blood vessels to unclog arteries, diagnose disease, or kill cancer cells.
