5 Tips to Make Your Windows 10 System Cleaner Without Third-Party Tools

Configure automatic storage awareness
In Windows 10, Microsoft began to pay attention to the maintenance of the system space. The most direct manifestation of this change is the storage-aware function introduced since v1703 version of Windows 10.

The storage-aware function is located in “Settings → System → Storage”. We can actually think of it as an automated tool set: first it will make a pre-judgment and it will run automatically only when the storage space is insufficient. The computer uses the frequency to set the running period of storage awareness. At the same time, the file types covered by storage awareness include unnecessary temporary files, recycle bin files, and files in the download folder that exceed a certain time. These files are automatically deleted after triggering storage awareness. Time and cycle are also adjustable.

For example, the “Downloads” folder acts as a temporary transfer station for many people. The downloaded files are gone as soon as they run out, and they will definitely occupy a lot of space over time. And storage awareness can clean up those unused download files for a long time according to our settings.

After the storage awareness is configured according to habits, the automatic cleaning at the system level has quietly started, and all processes are completely non-sense, and it has almost no impact on our daily use.

Perform manual file cleanup
If you find that your computer’s storage space is “seeing popularity”, it is also necessary to manually clean it up immediately. Windows 10 system also provides us with the function of manual cleaning.

In “Settings → System → Storage → View storage usage on other drives”, we can click any local storage drive letter that needs to be cleaned for storage usage analysis. The system will list the approximate usage of the storage space in the partition . As far as system partitioning is concerned, we can directly select “temporary files” in the analysis results, “Windows Update Cleanup” which takes up a lot of space, and “System Error Memory Dump Files” that are generally not used for cleaning.

If your system is functioning properly after the update, it is completely okay to delete the “copy of previous Windows updates” here.

The cleaning function provided here is basically the same as the common disk cleaning tools on the market. It integrates basic system file cleaning functions and is intuitive and convenient to use. Not only can it effectively clean up storage space, but it can also ensure the stability of system operation to the greatest extent. And security, it is almost impossible to clean up critical files and cause problems.

Change the common directory save path
If your computer has multiple disk spaces, then moving some commonly used but often unnoticed documents to other partitions is also a good way to organize your storage space.

Starting with Windows 10, the system provides us with a more intuitive way to adjust these storage presets. In “Settings → System → Storage → Change the save location of new content”, we can adjust the storage location of applications, documents, music, photos and videos, movies and TV, and offline maps. For example, the application data that takes up the most space, if your system partition space is not enough, saving it to other partitions can save a lot of space for the system partition.

Even those applications that have been installed can be adjusted: In “Settings → Applications → Applications and Features”, we can move applications downloaded from the Windows Store, such as iTunes, which takes up a lot of space. If the default system partition capacity is stored, Limited, moving it to a non-system partition can solve many problems that require an “application moving” assistant to get it done.

Make the most of cloud storage
On the Windows 10 system, we recommend a cloud storage tool such as OneDrive. In addition to seamless integration with Windows system and free space of nearly 15GB, the most important thing is its iconic file on-demand function.

The file-on-demand feature allows us to select files that we need to save and use locally on demand, and files that are less frequently used and less important can be placed in the cloud to make way for local storage space.

At the same time, combined with the aforementioned storage awareness function, Windows 10 system can also automatically clean up those files that have been downloaded locally.

Configure library or quick access
Compared with the previous cleaning and organizing functions, configuring the library or quick access is also an effective way to effectively improve the cleanliness of the storage space and avoid problems such as file directory confusion and repeated downloads. We often organize documents or other reasons. The previously downloaded file could not be found, and the end result was repeated downloading of the same file, resulting in a waste of space.

Therefore, the configuration library or quick access can facilitate us to quickly locate the existing files, and help to develop a good file classification habits.
