Exploring China’s first “Devil City”

Mysterious “Devil City”
Hami “Devil City” is located about 100 kilometers southwest of Hami City, Xinjiang, and can be reached by car for more than 2 hours. The Devil City, geologists call it the Yadan landform, which originated from the Mongolian people, because the strangely shaped hills are often accompanied by raging winds, and the Mongolian herders living around the area call it “Surumuq”. Later, the Kazakh shepherd called this place “Istanbul”, meaning “the place where the devil lived.”

At 5 o’clock in the morning, we couldn’t wait to drive. Along the 312 National Road westbound, on the Gobi Desert on the edge of the oasis, there are arranged circular mounds, like the craters on the moon, from the foot of the Tianshan Mountains to the oasis. This is the Kaner well known as the “underground canal”.

Since the Gobi Desert on the way was slanted from the foot of the Tianshan Mountain, the Kaner Well in this area was especially concentrated, and the well line was clear and spectacular.

In the vast open Gobi sea, the earthen platforms, the hills, and the valleys have been eroded into various images by the millennium. Those terraces that protrude from the ground, some like castles, temples, and monuments, some like the galloping horses, some like the devil’s face, some like the old cow cart, some like the Beijing Temple of Heaven, some like Buda La Palace, some like the Sphinx. There are also mysterious Tallinn, the Buddha’s meditation… it is dizzying. Some of them are a few meters high, some are tens of meters high, strange and imaginative, and they are worthy of being masterpieces of nature’s wind power.

More interestingly, there are still many “animals” here! For example, the Gobi lie camel, the sand sea whale, the tiger screaming demons, the Dapeng wings, all of them are all ingenious. In front of these, at least a million years of wind, sun, frost, rain, especially the strong desert wind and polished sculptures, people open their eyes, it is no wonder that the “Yadan Crown” reputation!

There is a monument in the Devil’s City Scenic Area, and the book “Guanhai City Tower”. When we went, we happened to run into it: suddenly a lush green virgin forest appeared in front of us, and suddenly an old European castle stood in the mountains, and suddenly it was a vast lake that entered the field of vision, unpredictable and magnificent, and it was difficult to distinguish illusions and real scenes at one time. . Can not help but marvel at the magic of Xinjiang Gobi desert!

Landscape comparable to Yellowstone National Park, USA
Hami Devil City is more than 60 kilometers long from east to west. Together with the South Lake Grand Canyon, it can be extended to more than 200 kilometers and 30 kilometers wide from north to south. With an area of 2,400 square kilometers, it has a variety of landforms, unique shapes and large areas. It is called “China’s first devil city.”

The reason for this is that there are many devil cities in Xinjiang, and there are four large-scale and famous ones – Karamay Urg Devil City, Qitai General Gobi’s Devil City, Lop Nur’s “Dragon City” and The Devil City of Hami Five Fort, in which Hami “Devil City” is the well-deserved boss!

Walking in the Devil City, I found a few fossil fragments of ancient creatures exposed at my feet. In 2014, the American Journal of Modern Biology reported fossil specimens from the Hamigol wall: including about 40 females of the same genus, male pterosaurs, and five pterosaur fossils. This is the world’s first reported three-dimensional preservation of pterosaur egg fossils, causing a sensation.

As far back as hundreds of millions of years ago, it was not only a piece of zealand, but also a paradise where dinosaurs, gull birds, fish, shrimps and crabs flourished. Later, as the crustal movement and geological evolution gradually became a sacred field. Later, storms above level 10 frequently attacked the area. In the extremely long years, the sharp wind knife carved the 2,400 square kilometers of land into a strange land of Yadan. Even now, there are more than 200 winds blowing every year, and the winds above 8 are more common. It is for this reason that nature created this famous “devil city”.

In the bright sunshine, the Devil City is brilliant and full of masculine beauty. Here, the desert, the Gobi, the Grand Canyon, the Agate Beach and the Devil City are all in one, and they are in the wilderness, as if they feel that they have reached another planet, dead, dry, quiet, and rough. Hami’s “Devil City” is very distinctive in Xinjiang. It is a living fossil area that studies the formation, evolution and disappearance of the Yadan landform. The rough here, the shape here, the color here, the soul here, not only the holy place of tourists, but also the creative paradise of photographers.

Going further inside, in the magical Devil City, we have seen human remains thousands of years ago. A castle called Eskea, facing south, is located on a steep cliff with a height of 24.5 meters. It is completely integrated with Yadan from a distance, and is condescending and extremely dangerous. The mountain base it relies on is about 7 meters high. The existing city wall is about 50 meters long and about 4 meters wide. It is divided into two floors, and there are three more complete houses. The entire castle was built with adobe.

To enter the castle, you must first enter a circular sand dune in front of it, across the ditch between the dunes and the castle that looks like a moat, even into the scope of the castle. Around the castle, there are many remains of human activities around the city, and there are many purple-red pottery pieces and rusty arrowheads scattered on the ground.

To go to the ancient castle wall, only the soil slope about 45 degrees along the east is very hard to climb up. On the top, you can see the northern wall of the broken wall, and still retain the hole for defense and alert. The sharp wind has cut the walls very steeply. In some places, the walls have been suspended, and some adobes have been weathered abnormally. On the wall, you can also see the traces of the claws of the wolf and the eagle on the adobe, which makes people feel chilling. According to experts, this castle belongs to the Bronze Age. It is not known which year to build. However, it was used in the Han and Tang Dynasties. It is an important station for the “Silk Road”. In the 5th century, the cavalry of the Gaochang Kingdom often began to patrol Lop Nur, and it was still not abolished after the Tang and Song Dynasties.

Standing on a high point overlooking the Devil City, like the castle of medieval Europe. Large and small castles are scattered and staggered. It is said that such a majestic and superb landscape, there are only two places on the earth, in addition to Xinjiang Hami “Devil City”, the other is the famous Yellowstone National Park.

In the middle of the night, “Ghosts crying”
Whenever the wind rises, the sand flies away, the sky is dim and dark, and the strange shadows are blurred. This devil city becomes a chilling place. Such as the air flow of the arrows, shuttle between the strange mounds and rocks, making a sharp voice. The usual whirring has become a stern “ghost crying”: or like a man sorghum, or a woman screaming, or crying like a baby. Suddenly, as the drums of the war, thousands of troops were killed. The screams resounded through the sky, and then died for a moment, waiting for the next sound…

At this moment, standing on the steep mounds, you will feel an artistic conception: the dangerous building is 100 feet high and the hand can pick the stars. Do not dare to speak loudly, fear of heaven.

Unconsciously, the sunset of the red dragonfly hangs like a copper plaque on the horizon, and the whole city of the devil is bathed in the afterglow of the sun. The castles with high and low undulations and patchwork are outlined. It seems to be covered with a layer of maroon curtains, a wonderful journey of a dream world.

Hami “Devil City” is the location of the movie “No Man’s Land”. It is also one of the “China’s most beautiful Yadan” and “China’s 50 most worthy foreigners to go” with its unique natural artistic charm. Due to its wonderful natural nature, visitors from home and abroad are eagerly awaiting.
